Dysgerminoma of the ovary and pregnancy: a case report

A primipara, 26 years old was operated on when four months pregnant for a dysgerminoma of the left ovary. The tumour alone was removed, and she went to term and was delivered of a normal infant. Four years later this woman appears well. It is recommended that when the tumour is confined to the ovary alone removal of the affected ovary is all that is necessary, if the woman is in the child bearing age. Should there be a recurrence one can resort to irradiation as the tumour is radio sensitive (AU)

Unusual uterine bleeding: report of nine cases

Nine cases of severe uterine haemorrhage are reported. Eight suffered from afibrinogenaemia and the cause of the coagulation defect in one is not known. Of the cases of afibrinogenaemia, one was associated with a dead foetus, one with malnutrition and liver damage, and six with accidental haemorrhage. A differential diagnosis of coagulation defects associated with pregnancy is attempted and a plea is made for further studies of the coagulation defects associated with pregnancy. Every hospital should have available at all times facilities for the rapid diagnosis and treatment of all cases of haemorrhage. (AU)

Chloral hydrate and rum analgesia in labour

The mixture of chloral hydrate and rum is not as was once thought. Thirty grains of chloral hydrate, one ounce of rum, and one ounce of syrup given to a woman in labour when the cervix is about three fingers dilated, is safe and effective. The addition of available calories at a time when the patient needs extra energy is an added advantage. At no time during the study or thereafter, were we ever alarmed by any toxic effect of the combination

Phaeochromocytoma and pregnancy

A case of phaechromocytoma diagnosed during pregnancy is reported. References to the literature are made. A plea is made for considering this condition in cases of hypertension and toxaemia of pregnancy. (AU)
